Stealing Lives/Der Raub des Lebens - Review by Angelika Oetken

'Stealing Lives'/'Der Raub des Lebens' is a must for all, who are researching or seeking literature about systemic child abuse and sexual violence in the Roman Catholic Church and/or with the history of religious and state supported abuse in residential schools and educational facilities. This book is highly recommended for experts and a broader readership new to the subject alike due to its multi-layered but easy to read comprehensiveness and thoughtful and all-encompassing Multi-Genre structure. It offers unique in-depth analysis, facts, connects dots internationally and historically on many topics. Rafael Viola shares his painful odyssey through various British residential schools and institutions that were infamous for their notoriety and run by the Catholuc Church. He describes how his fellow survivors and him had to relive the abuse and how they were retraumatised by the broken promises of church and government to bring justice and closure to them in due process. He tells how he was continuously and repeatedly experiencing as an adult the crimes that were committed in his childhood towards the little boy. Countess Sigrid von Galen weaves in her own experiences as a fellow whistleblower and survivor of the organised criminality of the Catholic Church and that of the allies of the church leaders. Both authors are living proof and are leading by example in their quest for justice by showing the meaning of resilience, love for humanity, humour and how important the nurturing of all that is good and decent in life is for a victory in this war raged by this despotic enemy.

Stealing Lives/Der Raub des Lebens: Reviews

Review: „Stealing Lives" – and the limits of inquiries

27. August 2023 von Nicht-die-einzige

What the institution calls "processing" is often a mixture of partial truths and the omission of essential aspects and facts or actions for those affected.

This is the case in the German dioceses, it is no different in the United Kingdom. The perpetrators and their crimes are often swept under the carpet, cover-ups go unpunished, if not unnamed. It was no different when dealing with abuse and violence at the Croome Court residential school. In their book, Countess Sigrid von Galen and Rafael Viola report how the IICSA - "Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse", which took place in London from 2015 to 2022, looked like, based on their own experiences in different capacities. Viola was a member of the committee that took over the "processing".

Prof. Dr. Thomas Hanstein kindly provided me with his review of the book for this blog.

At Croome Court residential school, run by the Sisters of Charity of St Paul's Apostle under the supervision of the Archdiocese of Birmingham, author Rafael Viola experienced the hell of his childhood as a little boy, according to his own harrowing accounts. He ran away from there several times, but was always brought back – against the express will of his parents, who incidentally were the only ones who believed his reports.

Viola and Countess von Galen also describe how the pupils could be abused undisturbed in the Croome Court hell: state authorities were systematically functionalized by church manipulation; due to inadequate, dysfunctional control mechanisms, they would have kept out of checking on the events of those in their protection and practically exposed the children and young people to abuse in church homes and schools. The only longer walks, for example, were always when an inspector had announced himself. He then inspected an empty house over tea and biscuits.

Countess von Galen and Viola report this and much more that is shocking in 21 chapters. Also, how Rafael Viola was only able to allow – and express – his memories of his childhood experiences in several church institutions at the age of 55. By that time his wife had already passed away. Thus, when reading the book - which is not easy - one is once again confronted with the fact that it can take more than half a lifetime before traumatizing experiences are ready to be processed by consciousness. Supported by his daughters and a number of friends, Rafael Viola has been unstoppable since then, and he found a powerful ally in Countess Sigrid von Galen.

After Viola was able to name his experiences, it was very important to him to contact other people affected and to build a network. After the IICSA was constituted in 2015, he was appointed "Ambassador for the Independent Investigation into Child Sexual Abuse". Against the background of these insights, he now calls it a "crime per se" that there has been "no adequate investigation to date" (p. 12).

In his report on his experiences, he writes that he was willing to give a report to the IICSA on condition that he could present it in its entirety - citing the lack of time, it was finally reduced to TWO minutes. Other victims were not even heard at all. Rafael Viola speaks of attempts at intimidation, manipulated assessors and playing for time, which is used again and again. Expectations were built up in order to disappoint them - whereby re-traumatisation was strategically taken into account.

Viola soon felt "used as an alibi survivor and figurehead" by the IICSA (p. 14). In addition to the humiliations that those affected have to endure every day in a trial, he has - despite everything - not received any honest apologies from the church to this day. Empty excuses, which remained without consequences, left only - mental and physical - consequences for those affected. Just as Rafael Viola suffered a nervous breakdown and a heart attack at the end of the long process, after having to be hospitalized in the middle.

Countess Sigrid von Galen also sees in the fact that files in this context are partially locked until the year 2045, a far-reaching global network of perpetrators - controlled in Rome - and a correspondingly deep-seated perpetrator culture. Therefore, she calls for the lifting of any special treatment and the diplomatic immunity of the churches and their representatives. In a concluding satirical chapter, she dreams of a show trial against the popes, in which none other than Mary Magdalene appears as prosecutor.

Association while reading: Coincidence would have it that "Stealing Lives" fell into my hands at the same time as the death of Sinéad O'Connor. The Irish singer, like Rafael Viola, has endured abuse and residential homes. With her - nevertheless - strong voice, she sang courage to many of those affected, maybe Rafael too. When the abuse tsunami rolled in Germany in 2010, she said to local activists: "Don't go to the bishops, they will only hurt you again." This assessment is also confirmed by the experience report by Countess Sigrid von Galen and Rafael Viola. And the conclusion that only networking, a tough fight, perseverance and mutual encouragement lead to success.

DerRaubdesLebens/Stealing Lives

is also very readable because of the many cross-references. The pattern described of the systemic abuse of the children in care, their comprehensive exploitation and the later processing simulation by church and state is a real blueprint for other countries.

A tragic factual story of the abuse of children.
By the powers that were officially put in place to protect them .  The judiciary ,local authorities .educational facilities .The catholic church .Not only that the money spent in the investigation, the millions out of the public purse went to judges ,lawyers, solicitors, mental health practitioners  and doctors and did not facilitate justice and correct compensation to the injured children for what they did to them .Lastly it was a professional cover up and a damage limitation exercise for  those government institutions and The church, Who were found to be so at fault .

Paul Griffith, Royal Marines

The Countess has done incredible research work supporting Rafael and the thousands of children his voice represents.  He's an absolute hero 🌟

A must read book not just for survivors&whistleblowers but also for researchers, law&health professionals as well as historians&interdisciplinary academics. No stone stays unturned here&the two authors risked their lives to write it.

An immensely important book especially in this time of daily exposure and surfacing of news about systemic numbers of child abuse and organised trafficking and organ trade with children as commodities by the churches.

Christoph Jauch, Münster

A tremendous amount of research, investigative reports, survivors and whistleblowers testimony, even a fictitious court trial as satire - all skillfully narrated and written in a most captivating manner in this all in one niche book that frees the silenced survivors from the innermost sinister Vatican secrets and breaks all taboos.
Countess Sigrid von Galen is our Lion's secret granddaughter and roars at the popes herself!

Absolute brilliant read well done rafael viola for putting this out there hope now others affected come forward

Thanks so much Countess Sigrid! My life has improved 100 percent since connecting with you and these truths. I no longer am alone with my  findings. Now i see much of my pain and suffering was to show me for myself these things are true and then connect with others who say the same. (i don't just read things and agree, i agree because i experienced them).
Christine Johnsson

i read your book daily. i just open to any page and i am healed by a few words like "rigged operations" (happened to me since i was born)  everything you say about retaliation happened to me. i am healed more from your book than from the bible scriptures that are often double talk (one page says something is good the next page it's not in the bible).. i know everything you say is true.  I bleieve we have the living real god holy spirit working through us telling our truth because it is THE truth. i am having a spiritual awakening from the truth from you and Rafael. Am so thankful

At the Point of a Pen - what is sharper: Word or Sword?! Thoughts on Brexit, by Countess Sigrid von Galen

Brexit: A Season of Reason or simply High Treason?, by Countess Sigrid von Galen

Brexit Negotiations entail Obligations of all the Nations to counteract terrorism, prevent social harm and disrupt organised criminality, and to also the most vulnerable not to fail! Frameworks and New Supranational Considerations,

By Countess Sigrid von Galen

The Brexit Saga narratives turn many British Remainers and EU-citizens alike somewhat into unwanted commodities, who have suddenly been abandoned and are made to feel like they have overstayed their welcome on the very island that has John Donne as a flagship captain  stating that "No Man is an Island"...

It is high time to listen to the grown ups with their inner child intact, like Rob Wainwright, Lynne Owens, or Tim Carmichael, Peter Omand, to name but a few, in the fields of international and multi-agency law enforcement, counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, military peace keeping and making, and also to volunteer experts and victims of crimes and to the many multi-disciplinary specialists,
who have been going numerous extra-miles in their fields to alert and warn and reshape and improve internationally the research and follow up action boundaries, goals and collaboration, and to adapt new strategies to keep up pace with the high threat level reality.

Frameworks and Out of the Box Considerations are already in place for multi-disciplinary proactive organised and white collar crime prevention, but we are all asked to contribute to sustainable and supranational security approaches and variable counter-terrorism measures by exchanging and/or sharing in many new and creative ways any information that helps to prevent also the crimes of the powerful, amongst whom there is a minority of perpetrators, who abuse their immunity.

We can only stop organised criminality and disrupt it on a wide scale, if those with diplomatic privilege and multi-national accreditation and special immunity also have to honour their status and adhere to some form of accountability.

We live in a time, where the very legal definition of crime is being twisted by some countries, close to as it once was in Nazi Germany, where legalised lawlessness was the norm. Wherever the simple natural law of decency and human dignity is violated, there is only chaos and devastation waiting at the exit.

Historically and presently, there are the same dark forces at work, who would like to cause orchestrated anarchy and who via their secret dangerous associations have infiltrated the military, law enforcement and security agencies but also systematically positioned their mercenaries and opportunists and sleepers armies in every country to destroy unity, peace, justice and truth. They do not want true friendship nor long-term alliances for peace and prosperity and human rights - they dwell on greed as their creed and on death cult lore and a culture of secrecy enforced by the dark elusive magic of organised white collar criminality, that is connected to pockets of elitist monopoly
and linked to fascist tendencies and delusions and obsessions of a new world order of supremacy.

Instead of aiding the negotiators, many political and thinktank keyplayers play chessboard games and abuse their immunity and privilege to sabotage honest and decent and sustainable solutions in as many ways as they possibly can, and are even boasting about it! Whilst those in the line of duty have a hard time to keep these evil and self-serving opportunist plotters safe, of whom some have been even subject to raids, and charges had to be dropped because the buck with their latest grand master of freemasonry or Templar stopped.

By all means - it is serious! Even some ol' boys do suddenly realise and recognise the death spiral they are in, and rather spill with their kin the beans and surrender their weapons in an amnesty, as these are no toys, when one former grand master against himself and with the masters of his lodge in The Hague and Brussels and along European ley lines testifies and to their families also the truth and justice not any longer denies...

It always makes me wonder, why the very dark force of ancient and medieval secret societies that is slithering through Europe's lanes and alleys and valleys is hardly ever even mentioned, when all those experts, who know the real reason of high treason and sabotage in any given season only too well, stay silent and pay bribery in cash at a spa well, as they have secretly negotiated their very own treacherous Brexit deal!

As General Tim Carmichael recently said in his very impressive speech at the London Techleaders' Summit: 'The sword was not made redundant by another sword but by a treacherous pen that was used for a contract of evil.' And he held up his sword into the audience, with the words I pass now on: 'And what is your point and edge, ladies and gentlemen?!'

Beware of what you wish for, as you might end up in an already corrupt see with numerous a rotten fish, and then, there will be nobody left, who rescues you selflessly, if you yourself poisoned the dish, and if you stole documents as a mole and accepted bribery from a Roman or Dover or rogue agency sole.

Lest we forget! Stand up to Fascism! Countess Sigrid von Galen

We have a responsibility and solemn duty to do all that we can to work for peace, justice and a life in humility and human dignity serving selflessly with our gifts before it is too late for humanity to survive!

Stand up to fascism and to the organised criminality that exists on all floors and which in disguise of authority is already again knocking under abuse of immunity and of authority on its victims and witnesses' doors!

Remember, death awaits, where there is no decency left and former friends and family turn enemy out of greed and envy to all, who are good, kind and decent. Lest we forget!

Creativity paired with Human Dignity is the Concrete and Foundation for a Living City, by Countess Sigrid von Galen

Creativity paired with Human Dignity is the Concrete and Foundation for a Living City,

by Countess Sigrid von Galen

A City can only survive nurturing Diversity and Human Dignity and by
shedding a culture of secret agendas and of monopoly. It is a worldwide process
often steered by the same multi-national keyplayers that cities are gentrified and
developed at the cost of losing their very life-blood by driving out the real talent and people,
who were bringing their area to life through their creative gifts and selfless service to the community.

In many cities, creative pools and living communities are driven out and killed off for the sake of greed.
Sustainability is only taken into focus as long as it is a profit making factor and exists only at face
value in the shape and size of the latest fancy perceived facades and interior designs.

The beneficiaries are mainly the jetsetting architects, developers and the construction industry captains.

Longterm developments for any city should take into consideration the dynamics of those, who are living in it already, and incorporate potential future inhabitants into existing communities rather than
let thinktanks design concepts that are meant to transform an existing area into the latest fashionable walking dead zone that spit mercilessly out  those, who can no longer  afford the new high-end prices and who are purposefully left out in the planning.

When will developers learn that the factors that bring an area to life are the ones, which they fight and actively aim to destroy?! Many do not even care and risk in the extreme a war - the riots in Hackney in 2011 are an example of that.

Thinktanks put together by lobbyists are often also the guardians of
old spiderwebs, who are driven by a hidden agenda for yet another
City of their making at their secret disposal for a new kind of world order
across every border.

Interestingly, recently an article in THE LONDONER found that there are
more Freemasons than women on London councils. Many decisions are made
that are based on greed and fascist and other hidden opportunist agendas
and all sorts of sandcastles built by Paymasters that are members of shadow
worlds and who high-finance ghost towns.

Time to bring in cities  those to the tables, who rather exchange their gifts freely
to bring their city to life and who do not exclude the vulnerable and rather
greet and support their neighbours as friends than to silence them along with
all their stories and living fables...
